Minister of Transport and Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango, MP, today engaged with Mr. Shebo Nalishebo, Executive Director of the African Development Bank (AFDB) responsible for Malawi, Zambia, Namibia, and Botswana, to discuss Malawis transport sector priorities and strategic infrastructure development initiatives.
During the discussions, Mr. Nalishebo and his delegation commended the Government of Malawi for its innovative approaches, including the use of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), to sustain and expand public infrastructure and services amid fiscal constraints.
The delegation also discussed ongoing and upcoming AfDB-supported projects in Malawi, notably the Nacala Road Project, the Nsipe-Liwonde Road Project, and the M5 Road Project. Through these initiatives, the Bank continues to make significant investments in transport infrastructure aimed at improving connectivity, enhancing trade and logistics, and supporting economic growth. The delegation is expected to visit the M5 and Nsipe-Liwonde road project sites tomorrow.
On his part, Mhango expressed gratitude to the AfDB for its continued support to Malawi's development agenda and the transport sector in particular. He emphasized the importance of regular road maintenance and underscored the need to diversify the country's transport system through increased investment in rail and water transport.
The Minister further assured the delegation of the Government's commitment to ensuring the successful implementation and long-term sustainability of the projects for the benefit of Malawians.
