Mzuzu Airport on Track for July 2026 Reopening

Minister of Transport and Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango, M.P., has reaffirmed that rehabilitation works at Mzuzu Airport are progressing according to schedule and remain on course for completion within the previously announced timeframe.

During a site visit on Thursday, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the progress made, noting that pavement works have been completed and the project is now moving towards the asphalt-laying stage.

“I think some good progress has been made since I last visited this place. In terms of the timelines, we are pretty much on course,” said Mhango, while commending the project team for delivering on their commitments.

The Minister also assured ADL and the contractors that the Government will continue to provide the necessary funding to ensure the remaining works are completed on time.

Airport Developments Limited (ADL) Chief Executive Officer, Zione Themba, echoed the Minister's optimism, stating that the project is expected to be completed within the announced schedule. She also confirmed that recommendations from a Malawi Airlines test flight, including asphalt surfacing of the landing area, have already been implemented.

Once completed, the upgraded airport is expected to improve safety standards and facilitate the resumption of scheduled flights, boosting connectivity and economic activity in Malawi’s Northern Region.
