The road will service the communities along it by providing easy mobility and accessibility to and from areas of social-economic activities. It passes through the part of southern Malawi which is know for agricultural activities especially the rolling planes where Malawi tea is grown. Thus the road will ease mobility and access to the estates and transportation to other areas of southern Malawi and beyond. Ending right at the foot of Mulanje mountain, the road will provide Tourists both local and international with better travel experience as they visit the mountain for various attractions like mountain climbing, camping etc. In addition the road offers the most direct route between Zomba and Mulanje rather than connecting through Blantyre.
The 61.2 km long, Lirangwe-Chingale-Machinga Road designated as S139 starts at Lirangwe Trading Centre in Blantyre District. It extends northwards passing through Chingale and Chinseu Trading Centres. The road passes through the gentle undulating plains of the western side of Zomba mountain traversing through swampy areas at Chingale.
The project works will involve upgrading the existing earth standard road to class II bitumen standard road with a 6.7m carriage way and 1.5m sealed shoulders on either side of the road. Four bridges will be constructed along the road.
The road will provide improved mobility and accessibility to areas of high agricultural activity that also uses irrigation farming thereby providing means for transporting agricultural products to various market across the area and the Southern Region of Malawi. Easy accessibility will enhance the economic activity of people around the area and ease movement of people to Malawi’s commercial city of Blantyre where they can access various services .
Branching off at Lirangwe on the M01 road from Blantyre, the road will feed into the M03 road all the way to Machinga . The route will reduce the distance to the lakeshore district of Mangochi and beyond to other Lakeshore districts. It is envisaged that this has the potential for increased tourism for both local and international.
The project’s Feasibility studies and detailed Engineering Designs were completed and at present procurement of a consultant for design review and supervision consultant is in progress. This will lead into procurement of a contractor to do the actual road works.
The project is for rehabilitation of a 75 Km stretch of road from Kamuzu Barrage in Liwonde to Bakili Muluzi Bridge at Mangochi Boma. The project is being implemented under the Nacala Road Corridor Development Phase 4.
Rehabilitation of this road will facilate international trade from the port of Nacala on the Indian ocean in Mozambique through Chiponde Border to Lilongwe in Malawi up to Lusaka in Zambia.
The road will also promote Tourism and local businesses as the road will ease travel to the Lakeside District of Mangochi via Liwonde.
The project commenced in August 2016 and is expected to be completed in August 2018. Th earthworks include widening, installation of culverts and construction of concrete bridges. The road will be surfaced with asphalt concrete.
