Minister of Transport and Public Works, Hon. Jappie Mhango, MP, officially opened the 2026 National Construction Day celebration in Lilongwe,
calling on stakeholders across the construction industry to uphold quality, invest in people, and embrace innovation as Malawi accelerates infrastructure development under Malawi 2063.
Held under the theme, “People, Quality and Innovation: Building a Legacy," the event brought together contractors, engineers, architects, consultants, policymakers, development partners, and other stakeholders to celebrate the construction industry's contribution to national development.
“Quality infrastructure is not merely about concrete, steel and asphalt. It is about safeguarding lives, protecting public resources, fostering economic growth and preserving national pride. It is a solemn commitment to every Malawian," said Mhango.
The Minister reaffirmed Government's commitment to strengthening skills development, supporting local contractors, promoting professionalism, and enforcing construction standards to ensure that infrastructure projects are delivered to the highest quality while creating jobs and driving sustainable economic growth.
Earlier, Principal Secretary for Administration, Fergus Gondwe, welcomed delegates and said this year's theme reflects Government's vision of a modern, professional, and competitive construction industry. He noted that the transition from the National Construction Industry Council (NCIC) to the Construction Industry Regulatory Authority (CIRA) marks an important milestone in strengthening regulation, promoting professionalism, enhancing accountability, and ensuring the industry meets national, regional, and international standards.
National Construction Day provides a platform for recognising the contribution of construction professionals while promoting collaboration, innovation, and excellence in building infrastructure that will serve present and future generations.
