Ministry Urges Architects to Build Structures That Stand the Test of Time

Principal Secretary Administration in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works, Fergus Gondwe, has called on architects in Malawi to embrace resilient, innovative, and purposeful design that responds to the country’s social, economic, and environmental realities.

Gondwe made the remarks today in Blantyre during the official opening of the 43rd Annual General Meeting of the Malawi Institute of Architects (MIA), held under the theme “Architecture at a Crossroads: Resilient Construction in Volatile Economic Environments.” He emphasised that architecture goes beyond constructing buildings, stressing that every structure should reflect identity, purpose, and the story of the people it serves.

“We must build things that will withstand the test of time, structures that are not only functional, but that tell the story of our people, our resilience, and our future,” said Gondwe.

He further reaffirmed government’s commitment to working closely with architects and other professionals in promoting safe, climate-resilient, and sustainable infrastructure that supports Malawi’s long-term development.
