Lilongwe, February 12 - Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jappie Mhango, has described the newly constructed Lilongwe River Bridge as a vital infrastructure project poised to boost Malawi's economic growth.
Speaking on Thursday during the handover and official opening ceremony, Mhango highlighted the bridge's far-reaching benefits, noting that it marks a significant milestone in the development of both the capital city and the nation at large.
"The bridge will improve road conditions, reduce travel time, and enhance safety, ultimately contributing to the country's socio-economic development," Mhango said.
He emphasized the strategic importance of the M001 road, where the bridge is located, describing it as a critical transport artery that connects Malawi's major cities and serves as a key trade route to neighboring countries.
Funded by the Government of Japan, the project reflects the enduring partnership between Malawi and Japan. Mhango expressed gratitude for the support, reaffirming Malawi's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and fostering continued cooperation.
Japanese Ambassador to Malawi, Yasushi Naito, echoed these sentiments, describing the bridge as more than just infrastructure. "This bridge is a pathway to prosperity and human development. It will strengthen connectivity, support trade, and unlock new economic opportunities for citizens and businesses," Naito said.
He also noted that the project provided valuable training and skills development for Malawian engineers and technicians, contributing to local capacity building.
