New Vessels for Lake Malawi Move Closer to Reality

The Government of Malawi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Xiao Xiang Investments at Capital Hill in Lilongwe to explore a strategic partnership aimed at modernising the country's marine transport infrastructure through private sector investment.
The proposed investment includes the construction of four vessels comprising a new passenger ship to replace the ageing MV Ilala, two oil tankers, one bulk cargo vessel, and the development of a new port at Kaporo.
Secretary for Transport and Public Works Bright Kumwembe described the partnership as a major milestone towards transforming water transport in Malawi, saying the country requires modern vessels capable of supporting tourism, facilitating cargo movement, and improving transport services for communities that depend on Lake Malawi as their primary means of travel. He added that the proposed oil tankers would create opportunities to transport fuel through Malawi's lake ports from Tanzania, reducing pressure on road transport while strengthening the country's logistics network and contributing to economic growth.
Representing Xiao Xiang Investments, Chen Lai-Feng said the company is committed to supporting the development of Malawi's marine transport sector through the construction of modern vessels and port infrastructure. He expressed confidence that, once the necessary processes are completed, Malawians could begin seeing the new vessels operating on Lake Malawi within a year.
The initiative forms part of Government's broader efforts to modernise the country's transport network, strengthen water transport connectivity and promote economic growth through strategic investment in infrastructure, in line with the aspirations of Malawi 2063.
